Who Is Axiom? WWE NXT Star: Transformation Of A WWE Superhero
Axiom, a WWE Superstar, underwent a transformation last year. After a successful run in NXT UK as A-Kid, he now plays a superhero character on WWE’s shows.
In July 2022, A-Kid rebranded as Axiom on an episode of “NXT 2.0.” He appeared as a masked superhero who was also skilled in mathematics. WWE introduced him with a video that aired on the 7/12 episode, showing him browsing through comic books and then donning a mask in the wrestling ring.
In his first video, Axiom hinted at wrestling under a mask. He expressed his love for comics as an escape from reality during his childhood. He dreamed of emulating his idols and becoming a superhero to inspire others. He chose to remain anonymous because his mission was about everyone else, not himself.
A-Kid made his NXT UK debut in April 2019, partnering with Carlos Romo, but they faced defeat against Gallus. He officially signed with WWE in October and started as a singles wrestler, defeating Kassius Ohno. He also won the brand’s first Iron Man Match against JD McDonagh.
Axiom’s debut vignette aired on the 7/5 Great American Bash episode, presenting him as a math genius who learned to fight bullies. Though his face remained hidden, fans recognized him by his accent and the back of his head. He emphasized that there’s a solution to every problem, whether it’s in math or life.
A-Kid briefly appeared in “NXT 2.0,” gaining victories against Grayson Waller and KUSHIDA but then vanished from NXT, returning to NXT UK. His extended absence likely allowed him and WWE to refine his new Axiom persona.
Axiom, whose real name is Carlos Ruiz, originally comes from Madrid, Spain. He gained recognition in the U.S. indie wrestling circuit with CHIKARA and PWG before joining WWE in 2019, initially in NXT UK.
He became the first NXT UK Heritage Cup Champion by defeating Trent Seven in 2020 but lost the title to Tyler Bate the next year. Despite the loss, he got a shot at the NXT UK Championship against Ilja Dragunov but couldn’t capture the title.
Since transitioning to WWE’s third brand, Axiom has faced various opponents, including Duke Hudson, Xyon Quinn, and Dante Chen. He was also in a feud with Nathan Frazer, which culminated in a trilogy of matches. Frazer won their final encounter, and they seemed to put their rivalry to rest.
Axiom had a brief rivalry with Carmelo Hayes, losing to him but defeating Trick Williams. Unfortunately, he couldn’t win the NXT North American Championship at NXT Stand & Deliver and lost to Wes Lee in a subsequent match. He also had a feud with Scrypts, ultimately teaming up with him.
In a recent episode of NXT, Axiom faced Butch (formerly known as Pete Dunne) in the Group A Heritage Cup Invitational, which ended in a time-limit draw. This earned both wrestlers a point. The updated standings for Group A are Butch with 3 points, Axiom with 1 point, Charlie Dempsey with 0 points, and Tyler Bate, who hadn’t yet competed in the tournament.
It’ll be interesting to see how the former NXT Heritage Cup winner performs in the upcoming weeks of the tournament.
