5 Biggest Upsets In UFC History

In the world of mixed martial arts (MMA), unpredictability is a constant. Fights can turn on a dime, and underdogs can rise to the occasion, shocking fans and pundits alike. Throughout the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), there have been moments that serve as reminders of just how unpredictable the sport can be. In this article, we delve into the five biggest upsets in UFC history, where fighters defied the odds and etched their names in MMA lore. #5: Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman, UFC 162. Anderson Silva, often hailed as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history, had been virtually untouchable for years. He held the middleweight championship and boasted a 16-fight win streak when he faced Chris Weidman at UFC 162. Weidman, with an undefeated record of 9-0, was considered an underdog, but few expected the shocking outcome that unfolded. In the second round, Silva employed his signature taunting, hands down by his side. However, Weidman remained composed and closed the distance, ultimately delivering a flurry of punches that knocked out the legendary champion. This loss marked the end of Silva’s seven-year winning streak and serves as a testament to the unpredictable nature of MMA. #4. Luke Rockhold vs. Michael Bisping II, UFC 199 Luke Rockhold entered UFC 199 as a formidable middleweight champion, riding a five-fight win streak and fresh off a knockout victory over Chris Weidman. On the other side of the cage stood Michael Bisping, who had lost to Rockhold previously and took the fight on just 17 days’ notice. Bisping was also considered past his prime at 37 years old. Despite the odds stacked against him, Bisping unleashed a stunning left hook that led to a knockout victory, crowning him the new middleweight champion. His legendary heart and determination, combined with witty banter in the lead-up, made this upset an unforgettable moment in UFC history. #3. Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm, UFC 193. Ronda Rousey was the face of women’s MMA, boasting a perfect 12-0 record with her last four fights ending in the first round. Holly Holm, while undefeated at 9-0, had not displayed the same dominance in her early UFC career. Most expected another routine victory for Rousey, but UFC 193 would deliver one of the most shocking moments in MMA. Holm utilised relentless movement, keeping Rousey off balance before landing a picture-perfect head kick in the second round, leading to a knockout victory. This upset was so monumental that oddsmakers declared it the single biggest upset in UFC history. #2. Amanda Nunes vs. Julianna Pea, UFC 269 Amanda Nunes, often regarded as the greatest female fighter of all time, faced Julianna Pea at UFC 269. Nunes was on a dominant run with a perfect 12-0 record and had finished her last four opponents within the first round. Pea, despite a 2-2 record in her last four fights, was labelled a massive underdog, facing a seemingly invincible ‘Lioness.’ Nunes appeared to be on her way to another victory with a strong first round. However, in the second round, Pea rocked Nunes before securing a rear-naked choke, winning her first UFC championship. This recent upset immediately entered the conversation as one of the most shocking victories in UFC history. #1. Georges St-Pierre vs. Matt Serra, UFC 69 Georges St-Pierre, often considered the MMA GOAT, had only one loss in his UFC career—a defeat to Matt Hughes. St-Pierre had avenged that loss and was riding high as the welterweight champion when he faced Matt Serra at UFC 69. Serra had earned his title shot through The Ultimate Fighter, but his 5-4 UFC record did not inspire confidence. In the first round of their fight, Serra shocked the MMA world by knocking out St-Pierre, becoming the welterweight champion in one of the biggest upsets in UFC history. This stunning victory, combined with the circumstances surrounding Serra’s title shot, solidified its place as the most incredible upset in UFC lore. The UFC has provided MMA fans with countless memorable moments, but these five upsets stand out as the most astonishing in the sport’s history. They serve as powerful reminders that, in MMA, anything can happen on any given night, and underdogs can defy the odds, etching their names in the annals of UFC history.

UFC 293 Results And Report For 10 September: Highlight, Match Ratings, Winners And Losers

In the realm of mixed martial arts (MMA), few events have sent shockwaves through the community like UFC 293’s main event. This highly anticipated showdown saw Sean Strickland, the underdog of underdogs, face off against one of the most revered champions in UFC history, Israel Adesanya. What transpired inside the cage in Australia that night will be etched in MMA history forever, as Strickland delivered a masterful performance to dethrone Adesanya and claim the UFC middleweight championship. From the moment the octagon doors closed behind them, Sean Strickland displayed an unmatched level of determination. Despite entering the fight as a massive underdog and facing a formidable opponent like Adesanya, Strickland showed no signs of trepidation. Instead, he employed a relentless forward-moving strategy that left Adesanya baffled and unable to execute his signature striking game. Adesanya, renowned for his proficiency as a kickboxer, was expected to dictate the pace of the fight with his striking prowess. However, Strickland’s unrelenting pressure kept Adesanya on the defensive, rendering him ineffective throughout the match. In a fight that never touched the canvas, Strickland’s calculated approach ensured that the champion rarely found opportunities to unleash his offensive arsenal. Strickland’s dominance was evident right from the opening bell, as he landed a series of powerful strikes that severely hurt Adesanya in the first round. This early onslaught set the tone for the remainder of the fight, as Strickland continued to push the action, keeping Adesanya with his back against the cage. As the fight progressed into the second round, Israel Adesanya seemed to regain his composure and begin to find his rhythm. He managed to land a few effective strikes and displayed moments of brilliance, but much of his success appeared to come from Strickland’s reduced offensive output. Adesanya’s attempts to mount a comeback were thwarted by Strickland’s unyielding forward movement. Despite these brief moments of resurgence, Adesanya was never able to establish control over the fight. Strickland’s simple yet effective approach of pressuring the champion continuously kept Adesanya on the back foot, denying him the space and time needed to unleash his technical striking abilities. As the final bell rang, there was little doubt about the outcome of the contest. All three official scorecards unanimously declared Sean Strickland the victor, with scores of 49–46 in his favor. This unexpected turn of events crowned a new UFC middleweight champion, leaving the MMA world in awe of Strickland’s accomplishment. In the aftermath of his historic win, Sean Strickland displayed humility and respect towards his opponent, Israel Adesanya. “You guys know, Izzy is a bad motherf—er, guys,” Strickland acknowledged in his post-fight interview. “He’s beaten the majority of my friends pretty easily. I was doubting myself at times, but the fans in Australia motivated me. In the fourth round, when I heard you yelling, it motivated me, guys.” Strickland’s words reflected the deep admiration and respect that fighters have for Adesanya’s accomplishments in the sport. It was a touching moment of sportsmanship in the midst of an astonishing upset. The fight marked Israel Adesanya’s first title defence in his second stint as the UFC middleweight champion. After suffering a knockout loss to Alex Pereira in late 2022, Adesanya made a triumphant return earlier this year, reclaiming the championship. His plans were originally set to include a title defence against Dricus Du Plessis, fueled by a contentious rivalry between the two fighters. However, when Du Plessis was unable to accept the fight at UFC 293, Sean Strickland stepped in, with many in the MMA community dismissing his chances of victory. Instead, Strickland defied all odds and delivered a performance that not only secured his place in MMA history but also cast doubt on Adesanya’s legacy as an all-time great. The unexpected outcome added a layer of unpredictability to the sport and demonstrated that in MMA, anything can happen when two fighters step into the cage. 5 Highest Paid Current Female UFC Superstars In 2023

When did Ronda Rousey make her UFC debut?

The UFC, established in 1993, welcomed women’s MMA into its fold two decades later at UFC 159. This year marks a decade since Ronda Rousey defended her title against Liz Carmouche in the UFC’s inaugural women’s MMA bout. Since then, women’s MMA has evolved dramatically, with the UFC octagon hosting some of the most formidable female fighters in combat sports. Let’s delve into the careers and earnings of the top-earning female athletes in the UFC as of 2023. Amanda Nunes, often hailed as the greatest female fighter in UFC history, has dominated the bantamweight and featherweight divisions. She boasts victories over iconic opponents such as Ronda Rousey, Meisha Tate, Holly Holm, Cris Cyborg, Raquel Pennington, and Megan Anderson. Nunes holds the distinction of defeating former flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko twice. With multiple titles and successful defences, Nunes stands as the highest-paid women’s athlete in the UFC, accumulating a career earnings total of $8.36 million, according to MMA Salaries. Ronda Rousey is a trailblazer in women’s mixed martial arts and is credited with normalising women’s participation in the octagon. She once appeared unbeatable, finishing 11 of her first-round opponents. However, her career took a downturn following a devastating KO loss to Holly Holm. Rousey made a seamless transition to WWE, where she continues to earn significantly. Her MMA earnings are reported at $4 million. Joanna Jdrzejczyk is renowned as one of the most lethal strikers in the UFC. Despite having only two wins in the promotion, she faced then-strawweight champion Carla Esparza and secured a second-round finish, claiming the strawweight title. Jdrzejczyk defended her title five times, establishing herself as one of the most influential fighters in women’s MMA. She has been part of some of the biggest pay-per-view events in the UFC’s history, with career earnings estimated at $3.29 million. Valentina Shevchenko is celebrated as one of the finest strikers to grace the UFC octagon. She reigned as the women’s flyweight champion from 2018 to 2023 before losing her title to Alexa Grasso at UFC 285. Nevertheless, Shevchenko remains one of the most formidable women in the organisation, with only three losses in the UFC, two of which were to Amanda Nunes and the most recent to Alexa Grasso. Shevchenko’s career earnings are reported at $2.7 million. Holly Holm catapulted to fame with her stunning knockout victory over former bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey at UFC 193. Her second-round head-kick KO of Rousey was a monumental moment, prompting her home state to declare November ‘Holly Holm month.’ Despite not holding the bantamweight title for an extended period and experiencing a relatively modest career since, Holm remains among the highest-paid female MMA fighters in the UFC, with reported career earnings of $2.3 million. These remarkable athletes have not only left an indelible mark on women’s MMA but have also significantly padded their bank accounts. Their dedication, talent, and fearless performances continue to inspire future generations of fighters in the UFC. Justin Gaethje Wants To End Conor McGregor’s Career

Justin Gaethje recently claimed that he wants to be the one to send Conor McGregor into retirement. The top-ranked lightweight contender and ‘BMF’ champion is seemingly tired of the Irishman’s antics while inactive. While Gaethje knows the chance of a fight against McGregor is highly unlikely, he hopes such an opportunity arises.  It’s no secret that Conor McGregor and Justin Gaethje are on bad terms. Soon after ‘The Highlight’ defeated Dustin Poirier to win the BMF title, McGregor took to social media to slam Gaethje for not being worthy of such a title. They took vicious shots at each other on Twitter, with Gaethje asking McGregor to sign a contract and settle it. With Conor McGregor highly expected to face Michael Chandler as his comeback opponent, it’s very unlikely that the UFC will book him against Justin Gaethje. However, keeping his hopes intact, ‘The Highlight’ recently expressed his eagerness to finish McGregor’s career once and for all.  During a recent pre-UFC 293 Q&A session with the fans, Justin Gaethje claimed that he “dreams” of ending the Irishman’s career in the octagon someday. He stated: “I’d be lying if I said I haven’t dreamt of ending his career… He won’t fight me.” Conor McGregor last faced Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021. The Irishman snapped his leg during the ill-fated bout and lost his second consecutive fight against ‘The Diamond.’ He has been on the sidelines ever since.  Meanwhile, Justin Gaethje last beat Poirier at UFC 291 via second-round KO. With a two-fight win streak over Poirier and Rafael Fiziev, Gaethje is angling for the next lightweight title shot against Islam Makhachev. He’ll have to wait for the Dagestani to get past Charles Oliveira at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi on October 21.

UFC 293: Top-Ranked Stars Predict Israel Adesanya vs. Sean Strickland

The highly anticipated Israel Adesanya vs. Sean Strickland middleweight title bout at UFC 293 is right around the corner. With the eagerly-awaited pay-per-view event pitting a high-volume fighter like ‘Tarzan’ against an elite striker like Adesanya, many of the UFC’s top-ranked stars have voiced their predictions.  Israel Adesanya is hands down one of the greatest kickboxers the UFC has ever seen. Additionally, ‘The Last Stylebender’ is also among the most dominant champions in history, having effectively cleared the 185-pound division. Given his incredible resume, most fans predict an easy victory for the Nigerian-born Kiwi. However, there are some who claim that Sean Strickland could prove a trickier challenger for Adesanya than expected.  Several UFC stars recently weighed in on the UFC 293 headliner. Here are some of their predictions: Michael Chandler: The mercurial lightweight contender is backing Israel Adesanya to beat Sean Strickland dominantly. Heaping praise on the reigning 185-pound king, ‘Iron’ called Adesanya one of the greatest MMA fighters on Earth. However, Chandler recognized Strickland’s “X” factor and claimed ‘Tarzan’ could shock the world with a knockout.  Alex Pereira: The former middleweight king is widely known as Israel Adesanya’s arch-nemesis in combat sports. ‘Poatan’ is also the only fighter ever to KO Adesanya and beat him on three occasions across two different combat sports. Pereira played the heel in Adesanya’s story once again and claimed if anyone could beat the middleweight champion, it was Strickland. Cory Sandhagen: The top-ranked bantamweight knew who he was betting on. ‘The Sandman’ called Adesanya’s kickboxing superior to any opponent he could face and predicted him to KO Strickland or outpoint him on the scorecards.  Anthony Smith: The perennial light heavyweight contender had an interesting opinion on the fight. ‘Lionheart’ claimed that Sean Strickland’s unorthodox style could prove tricky for Adesanya to deal with. While Smith conceded that ‘The Last Stylebender’ was the better fighter, ‘Tarzan’ could yet make the contest competitive.  These predictions have been sourced from various pre-fight press conferences and interviews.

BREAKING: Noche UFC Loses Pivotal Lightweight Bout

Noche UFC has suffered yet another setback with Natan Levy withdrawing from his booked lightweight matchup against Alex Reyes. Their highly anticipated bout was set to take place on the promotion’s Mexican Independence Day special Fight Night on September 16.  Veteran MMA journalist Marcel Dorff confirmed the development on Twitter and disclosed that promotional newcomer Charlie Campbell will replace Levy. Campbell was contacted shortly after the Israeli-French fighter confirmed his withdrawal due to injury. ‘The Cannibal’  is an alum of Dana White’s Contender Series season six and has a professional record of 7-2. He last beat Josh Streaker via first-round knockout at CFFC 120.  Interestingly, this is Natan Levy’s second fight cancelation this year. The Israeli-French lightweight contender was initially booked against Pete Rodriguez at UFC Vegas 72 in April. However, the fight was scrapped after Rodriguez pulled out. Natan Levy was then rebooked against Pete Rodriguez for UFC on ABC 4 in May, only to find out Rodriguez withdrew again. Levy last beat Genaro Valdez via unanimous decision at UFC Orlando last December and was riding a two-fight win streak. This development has added to the list of canceled Noche UFC bouts. Before this, the Mexican Independence Day event lost a blockbuster clash between Kelvin Gastelum and Shavkat Rakhmonov. Gastelum was forced out due to injury as well. Additionally, the matchup between Iasmin Lucindo and Josefine Knutsson was also removed from the card due to Lucindo’s injury.  Noche UFC is now set to be headlined by an exciting women’s flyweight title fight between Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko. Kevin Holland will go up against Jack Della Maddalena in a welterweight contest for the co-main event. Noche UFC will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas despite being a Fight Night event.
