5 Positive Takeaways From WWE Payback 2023

Becky Lynch Beats Trish Stratus

Payback 2023 lived up to the hype. The fans wanted nothing short of 5 star matches and most of them did deliver. The landscape for the WWE Superstars has now changed and with a few shuffles here are 5 positive takeaways from WWE Payback Storytelling for Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Seth Rollins: WWE has always placed a significant emphasis on storytelling as a fundamental element of its sports entertainment. Beyond the physicality in the ring, WWE excels at crafting compelling narratives that captivate audiences worldwide. Their ability to blend athleticism with dramatic storytelling has elevated wrestling to a unique art form. WWE invests in character development, crafting heroes and villains that fans passionately rally behind or against. As such, the story-driven feud between Nakamura and Rollins has been a breath of fresh air. Unlike the usual feud with the heel foreigner, WWE took a new route by having Shinsuke take things personally and want to hurt Seth Rollins and damage his career. This gave us viewers something more engaging to invest in than just a match. L.A. Knight gets the rub from Cena and makes memorable moments with the Miz: The storyline involving The Miz and L.A. Knight has been thoroughly entertaining to watch, and it’s interesting how it mirrors a lot of Knight’s detractors online. Miz outright denying Knight’s natural charisma and only choosing to draw comparisons between Knight and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin while saying anyone can be L.A. Knight and do catchphrases was truly entertaining. Knight, on the other hand, would say that he has clawed his way from the bottom to the top and has earned the fans’ approval. This past weekend, at Payback, fans were delighted to find that Knight got to share the spotlight with one of the greatest of all time, John Cena, but also defeated The Miz. The Judgement Day on Top after Win: Finn Balor and Damien Priest, part of The Judgement Day, unquestionably should have clinched the WWE Tag Team Championships. Their partnership embodies excellence in tag team wrestling, with a hint of betrayal between the two, which makes their dynamic very interesting. Finn’s impeccable technical prowess, coupled with Damien’s sheer power and agility, create a perfect synergy that’s hard to match. Their charisma and magnetic presence captivate audiences, making them true fan favorites. Winning the Tag Team Championships is not only a recognition of their talent but also a way to make the two feud with each other down the line, if need be. Rey’s retention of the U.S. Championship could make Santos turn on him. Santos Escobar, a highly accomplished and ambitious WWE superstar, could indeed find himself harbouring jealousy towards Rey Mysterio’s U.S. Championship reign. Escobar, known for his technical mastery and ruthless persona, may perceive Mysterio’s championship success as a threat to his own prominence. The jealousy might stem from a desire to prove superiority in the Hispanic wrestling community or simply to elevate his status within WWE. This storyline could ignite a fiery rivalry, fueled by Escobar’s envy and a burning determination to dethrone Mysterio, leading to an electrifying showdown for the U.S. Championship and intense drama for fans to savour. Becky and Trish Perhaps had The Match of the Year (so far): Fans might have expected this showdown at SummerSlam, but looking back, having it at Payback might have been a better choice. While Payback isn’t as grand as the summertime spectacular, it offered the women more time and a more prominent platform than they would have had in August. Admittedly, the feud extended longer than ideal, and the accompanying storyline didn’t quite measure up to the significance of two wrestling legends facing off. However, the eventual outcome compensated for these shortcomings. This bout emerged as a legitimate contender for Match of the Year and is a source of immense pride for both women involved. Becky Lynch and Trish Stratus stand as two of the most remarkable talents in the world of professional wrestling. Becky, often referred to as “The Man,” possesses an unparalleled charisma that instantly connects with the audience. Her in-ring skills are impeccable, and her ability to tell a compelling story within a match is unparalleled. Trish Stratus, on the other hand, is a legendary figure in the history of women’s wrestling. Her agility, athleticism, and adaptability made her a trailblazer. Trish’s dedication and contributions helped revolutionise women’s wrestling, setting a high standard for future generations. Both Becky Lynch and Trish Stratus have left an indelible mark on the wrestling industry, showcasing excellence in this match that will be celebrated for generations to come.

This hard-hitting bout left both women with physical reminders of their battle, but it was the jaw-dropping spots that stole the show. The superplex from the top of the cage and the avalanche Manhandle Slam were two moments that had fans on the edge of their seats. The match between Knight and The Miz was a star vehicle for the charismatic Knight, who has been on a hot streak in WWE. While Cena’s involvement teased potential interference, he allowed the competitors to take centre stage. After the match, Cena extended his hand to Knight as a sign of respect. This acknowledgement from Cena solidified Knight’s position as a major player in WWE. The crowd’s support for Knight was electric, and the chants of “LA Knight!” emphasised his status as a fan favorite. This match not only elevated Knight but also showcased Cena’s willingness to support and elevate new talent. 3 Surprising Returns That Shocked Everyone At WWE Payback 2023

WWE Payback 2023, held in a whirlwind of excitement, showcased not one but three sensational returns that had fans on the edge of their seats. This night was a true spectacle for wrestling enthusiasts, and it all started with a surprise appearance from Japanese wrestling icon Keiji Mutoh, known to the world as The Great Muta. The Great Muta’s Remarkable Comeback In an astonishing turn of events, The Great Muta graced WWE Payback with his presence. This marked his second appearance for the promotion, following his induction into the WWE Hall of Fame. Mutoh officially retired from professional wrestling after an illustrious 38-year career in February of the same year. However, as part of his retirement tour, Mutoh faced none other than Shinsuke Nakamura at Pro Wrestling NOAH’s The New Year 2023 event. This match was significant as it was Nakamura’s first contest outside of WWE in seven years. Fast forward eight months from that clash, and Nakamura had experienced a renaissance in WWE, leading him to the pinnacle of his career—a main event match at a WWE Premium Live Event for the World Heavyweight Championship against Seth Rollins. Before this monumental bout commenced, the cameras caught a glimpse of The Great Muta in attendance, showing his support for his former opponent, Nakamura. Michael Cole, on commentary, acknowledged the memorable encounter between Mutoh and Nakamura at NOAH earlier that year. The championship match itself was a hard-fought battle. Nakamura focused his attacks on Rollins’ injured back, a strategy that had been the centre of taunts and mind games leading up to this championship clash. Nakamura displayed an impressive offence, including a landslide off the middle rope, dominating the majority of the contest. Yet, despite his valiant effort, the 43-year-old Japanese sensation fell short of capturing his first WWE world championship. Rollins seized control with a Pedigree, swiftly followed by a reversal of Nakamura’s second Landslide into his signature finishing move, The Stomp. The celebration belonged to Rollins, while Nakamura watched in frustration from ringside. This intense encounter left fans speculating if this rivalry had truly reached its conclusion. The Return of Jey Uso In another thrilling twist at WWE Payback, the audience witnessed the long-awaited return of Jey Uso. This surprising comeback was announced by none other than Cody Rhodes, who revealed that he had pulled some strings to secure Jey’s place on the WWE Raw roster. The announcement took place during the “Grayson Waller Effect.” Jey Uso’s return to the squared circle saw him confront Grayson Waller, who, in his usual fashion, believed that Jey needed the “Grayson Waller Rub. Jey had other plans, promptly responding with a superkick to Waller that echoed through the arena. This return marked the end of Jey Uso’s brief hiatus from WWE, which began with a dramatic exit on the August 11 episode of WWE SmackDown. In a shocking turn of events, Jey had attacked both Roman Reigns and his brother Jimmy Uso, the latter of whom had cost him the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at WWE SummerSlam. This jaw-dropping return has injected new energy and unpredictability into WWE Raw. Zoey Stark’s Unforeseen Betrayal The surprises at WWE Payback didn’t end there. The first match of the evening, a steel cage clash between Becky Lynch and Trish Stratus, was the culmination of a storyline that had been brewing since April. However, when the odds seemed stacked against Stratus, a familiar face returned to even the playing field—Zoey Stark. Stark’s involvement was anticipated to shift the balance in Stratus’s favour, but in the end, it proved insufficient as Lynch emerged victorious. After the match, tensions between Stratus and Stark reached a boiling point, resulting in Stratus delivering a resounding slap to Stark’s face. The slap acted as a catalyst, triggering a shocking betrayal by Zoey Stark. Stark retaliated with her devastating finisher, the Z-360, leaving Trish Stratus down and out in the steel cage. This shocking betrayal signalled the end of an alliance that had kept fans guessing for months. WWE Payback 2023 was a night filled with unexpected twists, surprise returns, and dramatic confrontations that left the WWE Universe buzzing with excitement. As the dust settles, fans eagerly anticipate the repercussions of these jaw-dropping moments on the road to future WWE events.

WWE has announced that these two indomitable teams will vie for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship, setting the stage for an epic battle that is sure to leave fans at the edge of their seats. The announcement of this electrifying match came via WWE’s official channels, and it was revealed that the tag team champions themselves, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, were the ones who named the stipulation for their impending title defense. On the card are matches like Seth Rollins vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the World Title, Becky Lynch vs. Trish Stratus inside a steel cage, Rhea Ripley vs. Raquel Rodriguez for the Women’s Title, and LA Knight vs. The Miz. These battles promise to deliver the high-energy action that WWE fans crave. As the countdown to Payback continues, this week’s episode of WWE Raw features an exciting lineup of matches. Becky Lynch is set to face off against Zoey Stark in a Falls Count Anywhere match. With the impending Steel Cage match against Trish Stratus at Payback, Lynch will be looking to gather momentum and solidify her dominance in the women’s division. Expect this match to serve as a stepping stone for Lynch as she enters the steel cage. In another scheduled contest, Chad Gable is set to take on Ludwig Kaiser in a grudge match. With an eye on his upcoming Intercontinental Title rematch against Gunther, Gable needs to gather momentum to ensure he’s in top form for the title showdown. Ludwig Kaiser’s role here appears to be that of a stepping stone for Gable, with the grudge match adding an extra layer of intensity to their rivalry. Tag Team Showdown and Grudge Match: Key Predictions The New Day and Viking Raiders are set to collide in a tag match, with the former aiming to secure a victory and maintain their momentum as they pursue the tag team titles. The New Day’s victory seems likely, considering their number-one contender status and the need for retribution following the Viking Raiders’ ruthless attack last week. This match will undoubtedly provide fans with an exhilarating tag-team encounter. Tomasso Ciampa and Bronson Reed are scheduled for a grudge match, and Ciampa appears poised for victory. Seeking revenge against Reed for interfering in his business, Ciampa is motivated to even the score. With the added twist of Johnny Gargano potentially intervening, the stakes are high in this matchup. Gargano’s history with Reed, especially in the context of the North American Title, adds another layer of complexity to this encounter. Goldberg’s Potential Return and Exciting Prospects While the feud between Seth Rollins and Shinsuke Nakamura remains uncertain, rumours are swirling about Goldberg’s potential nvolvement. The absence of updates regarding the Rollins-Nakamura feud raises questions about Nakamura’s participation. After weeks of speculation about the former NFL star’s next potential victim, Goldberg may look to move Nakamura out. Goldberg and the King of Strong Style have met before, during Bill Goldberg’s stint in Japan. Could Goldberg make a surprise return and replace Nakamura in the title match against Seth Rollins at Payback 2023? With WWE Payback taking place in Pittsburgh, the stage seems set for a potential appearance by a part-timer like Kurt Angle. However, it’s more likely that Angle’s history with Jason Jordan and Chad Gable might make him a better fit for the Gunther-Chad Gable match. As for the Rollins-Nakamura scenario, Goldberg’s entrance into the picture seems plausible. Goldberg’s desire for closure in his wrestling career, coupled with his unsuccessful attempt to defeat Roman Reigns, positions him as a possible challenger for Seth Rollins’ title. Nakamura’s abrupt heel turn and lacklustre build as a challenger could pave the way for Goldberg to make a triumphant return and reinvigorate his quest for championship gold. All 6 Confirmed Matches For WWE Payback 2023

Payback is knocking on the door, and if you do read sports entertainment content, chances are you know that a major title change may only take place at a PPV, not otherwise. Austin Theory closing his 0 to The Master of the 619 was a breath of fresh air, but that usually doesn’t happen anymore. But that brings us to Payback, where all scores will be settled once and for all. On that note, here are 6 sure to happen matches at Payback: 1. Trish Stratus vs. Becky Lynch This rivalry is sure to come to a close when the two divas and the best of their respective generations meet to settle their issues once and for all. Becky Lynch has shown that she respects the legend only as much and will not look to share the spotlight a minute longer, should the veteran wish to bask in its shining glory. Payback will decide the conclusion, and as of now, it seems that someone is sure to fall in line. Considering this may well be Trish Stratus’ last year with the company, she will want to leave on a high. 2. Seth Rollins vs. Shinsuke Nakamura This feud may well be settled at Payback, as Shinsuke Nakamura has tested the patience of Seth Rollins. Monday Night Rollins, who will look to defend the World Heavyweight Title against a superstar who has The Messiah’s number of late, Shinsuke Nakamura, After two Kinshasas, the King of Strong Style got his shot at the gold, and we expect nothing but a 5-star match from two of the best wrestlers in the world, period! 3. Rhea Ripley vs. Raquel Rodriguez Rhea Ripley is expected to defend the WWE Women’s World Championship at Payback against the slightly taller Raquel Rodriguez. This was a bout that was a done deal back in SummerSlam but was left out by the creative. Raquel Rodriguez has been waiting to take out Mami and prove her superiority. With Judgement Day around the corner, this match may have just the right amount of sauce to be a cult classic. 4. Gunther vs. Chad Gable In our previous article on CombatSports247, we dissected for you how Gunther vs. Gable will not have a clean finish on Raw. With a classic such as the one we have, there are no doubts that this cake will be spoiled by the non-competing members of the Imperium who will get Gunther disqualified, only to keep the title and remain Intercontinental Champion. This has brought us to Payback, where this feud will be ended once and for all. The title may not exchange hands on next week’s Raw but may do so at WWE Payback. 5. The Miz vs. LA Knight This was a match that was on the cards even before it was announced. It all started with the A-lister shunning the newest fruit in the market, LA Knight, and saying he was nothing more than sour grapes. The LA Knight Express has been going full steam in the direction of The Miz, and it will be interesting to see how the former Intercontinental Champion deals with a complexity of this magnitude. The Miz does not like being sidelined by up-and-coming talent. He is known to hold down talent and not give them their rightful share of the spotlight. It’s now or never for the A-Lister to keep his stock high, and what better way than to take out the darling of the masses? The Miz never got the applause that he deserved and is hence still bitter over why a relatively new superstar, LA Knight, gets so much TV time. 6. The Grayson Waller Effect with Guest Cody Rhodes This just came in and may well take the PPV by storm. Cody Rhodes has been added to the roster following his recent flick with Grayson Waller. Expect this match to be confirmed during the show. Grayson Waller knows this is his chance to get noticed by the entire WWE Universe and make a name for himself. Should he pull off the mammoth upset, his name could be inserted into the title picture.
