Angela Lee Reflects: “The Greatest Battle Is With Yourself” In Decorated MMA Career

10 months ago By Jhon Woug

Angela Lee is a name that symbolises strength, supremacy, and deep-fought combat inside a fighter’s mind. A 27-year-old Singaporean American, widely called “Unstoppable, has recently retired from her stellar career in the ONE Championship and left behind a legacy that is simply beyond the cage.

Angela’s journey within the sphere of professional wrestling was simply extraordinary. As the former undisputed ONE women’s atomweight MMA world champion, she made her name in history. However, when she gazes at the career that has been decorated from many standpoints with victories and accolades, it is not the external foes in her mind but how many struggles she has fought within the recess of her own brain.

In a recent episode of the Keep It Aloha podcast, Angela reveals her most significant insight from years of being on top in MMA. She talked about the intricacies of the mind—a realm where the fiercest fights take place. It’s not just about being strong; it is a battle against all doubts, fears, and insecurities that lie within the psyche of even the greatest fighters, waiting for their chance to undermine them.

Angela emphasised, “As a fighter, the largest fight you’re going to have isn’t with an opponent standing in front of you; it is within yourself. Audio from someone who has seen the fight game many times carries some weight. They capture the spirit of a career that went beyond pure physicality, delving into the mindset of an athlete.

Angela Lee’s departure from professional fighting at the end of 2023 was not about bailing out on challenges but rather realigning priorities. Opting to direct her passion towards the non-profit organisation FightStory, she undertook a crusade in memory of her deceased sister Victoria ‘The Prodigy’ Lee, who was herself an athlete with ONE Championship. This move shows that Angela is determined to deal with one of the most important issues, which very often remains in its shadow: mental health.

Angela recognises the fact that being a professional fighter is far from just about what happens within and outside of the ring. It’s not about surmounting complexities in one thought, emotions, and the ceaseless inner talk that comes with a fighter. As she rightly says, the mind is indeed a powerful entity; not only does it influence emotions but also actions and ultimately destinies.

Angela’s wisdom transcends the limits of the fighting arena. It connects with anyone going through life’s hardships. She posits that the power of the mind lies in its ability not only to dictate what we think but also how we feel and do. It’s like a ripple effect where thoughts, emotions, and actions are interwoven to make up our lives.

Angela believes it is pivotal to learn to strengthen the mind. It’s not only about physical training; it is a discipline that requires the same dedication and rigour as any workout regimen. It is very difficult to redirect thoughts, especially during the darkest moments. It is a slow process that requires patience, resilience, and a deep understanding of your own mental terrain.

When one touches on Angela Lee’s post-retirement life, the narrative becomes tearful. She looks to become something of an inspiring force for the hopeless, depressed, and contemplating suicide, particularly among the martial arts community, so much so that it comes back around to her film FightStory, September 2023. 2021 brings with it the tragedy of the loss of Victoria. Angela desires to be an impetus for change outside barriers such as sports might have been.

Angela reaches her heart, and FightStory is not only a non-profit but reflects her strength as well, so that whenever she demands something, even in the midst of personal misery, it will become something positive. In discussing mental health issues, including those in the precarious arena of professional fighting, Angela wishes to create a safe haven where individuals can find the refuge, understanding, and assistance required when moving people through their most nerve-wracking hiding places already built within the mind.

Angella Lee navigates this new passage, and her tale transforms from considering destinations with triumph in the cage to title victories that are often overlooked because they stem from battles within. It is a story of finding your strength and inspiration and using what you have to give hope or change lives for anyone who needs it.

Some may see Angela Lee’s journey as confined to sports. It’s a journey per se that displays the interior process of the human mind that is able to bring itself closer to its own demons. She says reflective and wise words, demonstrating the mental landscape of a fighter to make one remember that our strongest battles take place inside us.

In this way, Angela Lee walks down the road of mental health advocacy through FightStory, and if she still manages to be a living symbol of many estimating her actions, yes, she ‘continues in Girl Power’ modes. She stays as a constant icon for power, strength, and perseverance, which is undeniable human nature that resists getting blown away by pressures caused by an ongoing life journey.
